It was another Wednesday evening, the kids were with a babysitter, and just like the previous weeks, Mr. and Mrs. Walker were driving for another session with their couple’s therapist. Things between them had gotten worse lately, and though neither one of them could point the finger at what was causing it, they would argue constantly over everything and decided they should see a professional who could help with their relationship.

I nodded politely as my colleague talked in a heated passion about the upcoming changes. Murmurs of both agreement and disagreement rose around the table and I picked up my drink and took a long swig before setting it back down. Another colleague spoke now, contradicting the previous statement and a heated discussion stirred around the table. I tried to listen, but I was getting tired, my eyes getting heavy, and I stifled a yawn as I looked at the clock. I waited for the conversation to die down, the argument ceasing without any actual conclusion, and as people returned to talking amongst themselves, I excused myself, bidding them a good night, and got to my feet.

A special thanks to Steven Lucas for sharing this experience with me.
It was a warm November night in Miami, the salty scent of the sea drifting in the gentle breeze. The streets were bustling, teeming with the various people of the city. Steven walked briskly, his handsome features attracting the occasional gaze, and he ran his hand through his blonde hair.

I sat there, a smile plastered on my face, and laughed at a joke I barely heard. It wasn’t enough that I was holding a glass of sparkling water while everyone else had white wine in theirs, that I woke up nauseous every morning, that I had to go to the bathroom every five minutes, or even that I was so fucking fat I felt like an elephant, but now, due to another hormone or whatnot, I was sitting there, with my friends, and could barely think straight because I was so incredibly horny.

“Wooohooo!” Taylor called out over the loud music, holding up her shot of tequila, and everyone around her cheered along, holding up their shots. She put the glass to her lips, tilted her head back, and let the burning liquid enter her mouth and slide down her throat. She grimaced at the taste, slammed the glass down onto the backyard bar, and cheered again. She raised her head, rocking her body to the music, then grabbed the hand of the hot guy next to her. She pulled him back over to the dance floor, letting the music flow through her, then grabbed the guy and shoved her tongue down his throat.

“Yes, Yes, Oh my God, Yes!” I cried out in overwhelming joy as my boyfriend, Aaron, got down on one knee and opened the little box. Tears filled my eyes and I started crying softly as I looked down at the golden ring with the beautiful stone on it.

I pulled into the gravel road in my rented car and drove up to the main building, parking my car next to it. It was a warm sunny late spring afternoon in Sri Lanka. I looked around at the compound with content and walked over to the door with the word reception written on a sign next to it.

I slowly slid my hand on the bed towards my wife’s side, it was empty. “Up already?” I thought to myself as I opened my eyes and yawned loudly. I sat up in bed and stretched my arms before getting up and dragging myself to the adjoining bathroom, wearing just boxers. I could hear the water running in the shower as I pushed open the door, walked in, and closed it behind me.

I got up off the couch and turned off the TV. It was late, and I glanced out the window at the utter darkness that lurked outside. I let out a heavy tired breath, blinking, then dragged myself up the stairs. I quickly brushed my teeth, washed my face, and continued to the bedroom.

A huge thank you to CB for sharing her story with me.
Mia let out a frustrated sigh as she looked at the next semester’s course board. They were all full, every spot of every class already taken. All except one. She stared at the name of the class in her frustration, the name of the professor not even slightly familiar, but it was the only class left, and she needed the credits. She sighed, shaking her head, and looked at the time. It was already late, too late to call, and she decided to wait for tomorrow.
